Measures to be adopted for early detection and prevention of disabilities: We believe that according to the modern research:

1. Parents should get their blood test before marriage

2. Avoid inter marriages

3. Avoid early age marriages

4. Avoid late marriages

5. Mother should be very careful in taking medicines

6. Mother should be vaccinated about rubella and other diseases

7. Mother should get ultrasound to find out whether the infant is normal or have some abnormality.

Workshop

If the child has some disability, parents should start his/her treatment from the very first month so the child can be rehabilitated to a certain extent.

Research on prevention of disabilities: We at Al-Shifa have done a certain amount of research on the disability of children. We had made a survey and interviewed the parents of the special children. In most cases the parents were married in their family, some special children were born at their homes in lieu of hospital, some disabilities accurse due to the early age marriages or later marriages of their mother and some disabilities occur due to the high temperature or typhoid.

Most of the special children belong to a very poor segment of the society but they can afford to have a television and videos and dish antenna too. We feel that public awareness programs about the disability may be presented on television and radio in which instruction for prevention and rehabilitation of special children may be showed. Through these programs the mother could be educated for rehabilitation of her child in a better way.
